The Need for Change
Choosing the Right Partner
Finding the right partner was key. After considering multiple companies, Levin East School chose Creo, impressed by the balance of thoughtful design, cultural integration, and build quality.
Designing with Culture and Identity in Mind
The vision for this playground was clear—it needed to tell a story. Working closely with the school, Creo designed a space inspired by Levin East’s natural surroundings—the Tararua Ranges, Lake Whenua, and the nearby coastline. Input from the local iwi helped shape elements like the pātaka (a traditional Māori food storage hut), ensuring the space reflected the heritage and identity of the school’s predominantly Māori and Pasifika students.
The finishing touches came from the school’s own caretaker, Paul Barnard, who handcrafted intricate carvings that added a unique and personal feel to the space.
What Makes This Playspace so Special?
- Interactive Waka – A canoe-themed play structure inspired by local culture.
- Themed Flooring – Featuring eel patterns, native bird footprints, and a Pasifika trail for exploration.
- Inclusive Play Elements – A sensory board designed for students with special needs.
- Symbolic Play Mound – Representing the Tararua Ranges, bringing the landscape into the playground.
The Grand Opening
The excitement was electric when the playground was finally ready. After weeks of watching the space take shape, the students couldn’t wait to get in and explore. The opening ceremony was a celebration, and as soon as the gates opened, kids were off—climbing, running, and discovering their new playground.
This space isn’t just about play—it’s about movement, connection, and culture. A place where students can see their own stories reflected, where every feature has meaning.
A Playground to Be Proud Of
Levin East School’s new playground isn’t just a fresh set of play equipment—it’s a space designed with purpose. It reflects the school’s identity, embraces its culture, and provides a place where every student feels included.
From the board of trustees to the school whānau, this project was a collective effort—one that has created a playground students will love for years to come.
